The Effects of Training on Own and Co-Worker Productivity: Evidence from a Field Experiment RM/11/044 The Effects of Training on Own and Co-Worker Productivity: Evidence from a Field Experiment

This paper analyses the effects of work-related training on worker productivity. To identify the causal effects from training, we combine a field experiment that randomly assigns workers to treatment and control groups with panel data on individual worker performance before and after training. We find that participation in the training programme leads to a 10 percent increase in performance. Mo...

Worker reciprocity and employer investment in training

Standard economic theory predicts that firms will not invest in general training and will underinvest in specific training. Empirical evidence indicates, however, that firms do invest in general training of their workers. Evidence from laboratory experiments points to less underinvestment in specific training than theory predicts. We propose a simple model in which a firm invests the socially o...

Returns to firm - provided training : evidence from French worker – firm matched data

Using worker–firm matched data, we study the incidence and the effects of firm-provided training in France. When we use the same kinds of data and models as the existing ones, the estimated impact of training on wages is as high in France as in other countries. When we build on the uniqueness of our French data and control for the selectivity of firms’ training practices, the estimated impact o...

Returns to Capital in Microenterprises: Evidence from a Field Experiment∗ Suresh De Mel

We use randomized grants to generate shocks to capital stock for a set of Sri Lankan microenterprises. We find the average real return to capital in these enterprises is 4.6%–5.3% per year), substantially higher than market interest rates. We then examine the heterogeneity of treatment effects. Returns are found to vary with entrepreneurial ability and with household wealth, but not to vary wit...
